How TRE® Works

The exercises safely activate a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension and calms the nervous system. This muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is the body's natural antidote to stress and trauma, It is completely natural and once activated the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

profound release

After doing TRE people often report a profound release of deep held tension, a lessening of physical aches and pains, a release of mental and emotional tension and a calmness which often results in improved sleep. Sometimes these results can be immediate and at other times can take longer.

Relieve muscular tension

There are seven simple exercises which stretch and fatigue the muscles of the legs, working upwards into the psoas. The psoas muscle is directly connected to the fight or flight response and tends to be tight in most people. The exercises touch into this muscular tension and as the muscles tire they induce this gentle muscular shaking, As the body begins to naturally shake, tremor and vibrate we simply lay down and relax as this natural process unfolds. It generally feels pleasant and often times soothing, afterwards there can be a feeling of relaxation, well being and peace.

Tremoring is natural

Tremoring is so natural that we have all probably witnessed this or experienced it at some time in our lives, for example, when we felt nervous, afraid or excited. It can be seen in animals or small children but as we become more rational and less instinctive we begin to stop this from happening. Shaking also has associations with disease or weakness, which may also incline us to suppress the tremors. In some cases tremoring is a symptom of disease but this is entirely different from those generated by TRE.

Is TRE Safe?

Yes, Tremoring is the body's natural antidote to stress and trauma. The body tremors to release muscular tension. As the muscles relax, the nervous system can also relax, thereby also easing psychological tension. Whilst, at first this may feel strange and unfamiliar, we cannot get it wrong. Naturally, emotions can be a part of the process of release but within TRE we always take care that this unfolds slowly and at a comfortable level so that emotions are contained and integrated and not overwhelming.

An essential part of learning TRE includes how to self-regulate, that means being sensitive to our own needs and going slowly at a pace that we feel comfortable with. Developing and becoming aware in this way is a part of each and every session, guided and held by your provider.

TRE can be modified to accommodate anybody's needs and can be learnt and practiced by anyone, including all ages, disabilities and levels of fitness.

Whilst none of us are immune from stress in life, the extent of this varies from individual to individual. For those who have experienced more serious trauma or long term ongoing stress it is important to discern the level of support that may be needed. You are welcome to contact me to discuss this further.

It is always recommended to learn from a certified TRE provider.

Below is a short clip of someone tremoring for the first time:

TRE's Creator - Dr David Berceli

"All humans have an innate capacity to heal from traumatic experiences. We as a species are genetically encoded with the capacity to heal ourselves. If we did not possess this ability, our species would have become extinct shortly after we were born. Not only can we heal from traumatic experiences, but trauma itself has been part of the natural evolutionary process of our species, and all traumatized individuals have access to this natural healing method that is genetically encoded within them."

TRE was developed by Dr David Berceli in the extreme conditions of living and working as a trauma therapist in war zones in the middle east and Africa.

He spent twenty years working with individuals and groups and witnessed that the the response to threat was the same in everyone.

That is, for the body to contract and pull inwards taking on a protective stance. He recognised that this response was genetically encoded into the body and that this being so that the body was also genetically encoded to counter this tension with a natural release.  As a result he developed TRE.

It has helped many thousands of people suffering from PTSD, (post traumatic stress disorder) including war veterans.

It is not however recommended as a substitute for therapy or following the advice of a trained medical professional.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the above.

"Helplessness is a universal state for people overwhelmed by traumatic stress. Gaining control of their symptoms, their body, and their life is an essential part of the healing process. TRE is a powerful tool to achieve this. I have personally used TRE and have taught them to friends and patients with remarkable results."

About Jane

Both personally and as a therapist, working with individuals and groups, I have had a particular interest in body centered therapies.

I spent seven years training and working with Life Force Healing, a hands-on technique that facilitates the undoing of distortions in the energetics of our body. Out of that I developed a movement class; teaching people to listen inwardly and follow the flow of their own life force. It is something like Tai Chi but without any form. These movements can be quite beautiful, releasing and healing.

I also studied dance movement therapy, as well as other forms of dance, Tai Chi, breathwork and a practice called Continuum Movement which awakens the bodies fluidity.

Much of this was inspired by my own journey with chronic pain which began in my early twenties. Over the past 30 years, this journey has, without any radical cure been a steady deepening in my understanding and practice. It is an unfolding awareness that my body and others bodies can hold the pain of the unexplored and unreleased trauma of the past and at the same time be a doorway into an embodied aliveness and well-being. I find this journey immensely rich and appreciate both the difficulty and the joy that are a part of it. TRE has become a big part in this unfolding.

I find that the body and nervous system are profoundly sensitive and reflect how we are being. By directly journeying within our own internal landscape, we can befriend, question and become conscious of our own nervous system, heart, mind and emotions. Learning how to let go and find rest is an essential and ongoing part of any healing.

It is a pleasure to be able to provide a space for others to engage in this healing journey. TRE is an incredible tool to be able to do that. From the first moments I encountered it I fell in love with the practice and am continually impressed at its power and simplicity. TRE provides a direct way to work deeply with the body and since it can be learnt with a certified provider and then practiced at home, it offers a huge potential for individuals to be empowered in their own healing journey.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within us out into the world, miracles happen.”

Henry Stanley Haskins

More about Jane

I am also a qualified Person Centered Therapist. This approach to therapy was developed by Karl Rogers who believed that Empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard and Congruence are the core conditions needed to be able to feel a deep and genuine connection with one's own self.

Often times, we grew up without ever feeling these supportive qualities from an external source and consequently emerged into adulthood without any sense of our our own authenticity. We may feel lost and/or confused or overly hard and critical with ourselves.

Counselling offers the presence of deep non judgmental listening so that we may more easily explore our own internal experience without fear of judgement and rejection, eventually we can learn to internalize these qualities for ourselves.

I often work incorporating the use of the Felt Sense. The felt sense is how we sense and feel in our bodies just below our conscious thoughts. Working in this way reveals what is under the familiar stories that we tell ourselves and thus is a powerful resource in the emerging of a more genuine experience of ourselves. The work was developed by Eugene Gendlin and is called focusing.

Testimonials

Both my son and I have done TRE sessions with Jane and we have found them extremely beneficial.  Jane has also facilitated group sessions for my Yoga Teacher Trainees. Jane is an excellent facilitator.  She is calm, patient and very experienced in TRE herself. She brings this knowledge and experience to her sessions with others.

I would highly recommend TRE as it is such a gentle and non invasive way to process any kind of trauma, past or present.  As a yoga teacher and massage therapist I recognize TRE as a highly beneficial therapeutic modality and I for many people is the key to gently unlocking trauma from the body and nervous system.

TRE has gifted me with one of the most unusual and treasured experiences of my life.  Obviously a body holds on where it’s been hurt and TRE feels to me a safe and wholesome way for gently giving the body a way to let go through a  physical process without needing words or remedies.

Jane facilitates in a lovely and quieted way, guiding with good care in the exercises and movement, ministering with kindness and the highest intentions. I simply love it.
